News for the ‘what-to-come’ in 2012 has been trickling out of 2011 since last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Some have gathered steam and plowed ahead into the publicity cycle, but others have languished on the back burner waiting to hit the limelight once more.
I’ve sifted through countless articles and postings trying to find a suitable list of awesome soon-to-be going ons for the New Year, but if I were to make an exhaustive list detailing out all of the awesomeness about to overload our senses I’d be writing for days—perhaps weeks! So, to keep things simple I’ve narrowed down the list to a scant thirteen (far from exhaustive!).
These thirteen are centered around film and conjecture. A couple big projects in the DC, Marvel, and Image-verse have been officiated, but others are just rumors swirling about the mill.
So, at long last here is my thirteen-list of some interesting happenings going down in 2012 (in no particular order):
1. Guillermo del Toro’s Hulk on ABC
This one peaked my interest, because ‘hey’ it’s Guillermo del Toro, the mastermind and twisted genius behind countless mainstream and cult films including the Hellboy franchise. We’ll see if this comes to fruition, or not, and if it does I would love to see a Lou Ferrigno cameo.
CHEW is one of those series that you can’t explain. I’ve tried and failed miserably. All I’ve received are quizzical looks and ‘WTF’ expressions. But, if you had the pleasure of reading it you understand just how off-the-wall, unique, and excellently written the Image series truly is.
The production company behind AMC’s Walking Dead is working on a half-hour comedy for Showtime based off of the critically acclaimed series. Personally I think it would be a hit. It’s got just enough weird to take off and stand out, but still enough believability to draw in the necessary viewership. It wouldn’t work anywhere else besides on the premiums, so thank God it’ll be hittin’ the Showtime once it rolls off of the production rack.
3. Deadman on the CW
CW is desperately looking for a replacement for Smallville. After a highly successful ten-season run it is immensely difficult to let go, so in an effort to capitalize on their prior success the CW is recruiting the creator of Supernatural to bring DC’s Deadman to life on the small screen.
4. The Punisher on FOX
FOX is currently working on a pilot featuring Frank Castle as an officer by day and the Punisher by night. The premise is tight and FOX has already greenlit the pilot, so hopefully we’ll be seeing some Punisher action come this fall.
5. The Avengers (2012)
Opening in theaters this May Marvel Studios will finally be releasing the Ocean’s Eleven of superhero movies with an all-star cast and so much hype it could be film that actually breaks the bank. Move over James Cameron!
6. Batman the Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The conclusion to Nolan’s Batman trilogy has critics and fans mobbing to the intertubes with various conjectures. We’ll see how Nolan will cap it off, but if the past is any indication I think the Bat’s going to get broken.
7. DEAD by Daniel Way
Will Deadpool finally off himself? We shall see in this year’sDEAD by Daniel Way. The Merc with a Mouth might finally bite the dust. I’m curious to see how long he’ll stay dead and how he’ll end up that way.
8. Watchmen 2
A Watchmen sequel/prequel has been bantered about for months now. Some say, “Yay,” others say, “Nay.” I guess we’ll see if the Comedian has the last laugh on this one.
9. DC’s Mysterious Woman in Purple (Pandora?)
The mysterious stranger that graced the conclusion ofFlashpoint as well DC’s NEW 52 could finally hit the spotlight this summer in a possible DC event. Stayed tuned to find out.
10. DC’s Animal Man/Swamp Thing Crossover
Animal Man and Swamp Thing are two of the top dogs for DCat the moment and their momentous crossover is looming. I can’t wait to see the Rot, the Red, and the Green in an epic standoff.
11. Hellboy in Hell
12. Avengers vs. X-Men
The next big thing for Marvel fans is the Avengers vs. the X-Men! It sounds epic, and it probably will be. Schism was awesome and the promo art looks stellar (Check out the slideshow to see what I’m talkin’ about).
13. Album series by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard
The brilliant team behind Walking Dead is supposedly working on a new project with a more European graphic novel feel. Anything with those two is a for sure read in my book (pun intended).
Well, there is my thirteen so enjoy the new year, because it’s lookin’ like it’s going to be a good one!
